Helen Simard
April 10 > 13, 2019

Six dancers and three musicians distill from the recent times of the iconic punk rock figure Iggy Pop a universal essence, a reflective, frenzied and poetic portrayal of ageing and the mythologizing of the artist.

REQUIEM POP is the final section of a triptych (each of which is a stand-alone show) inspired by the “grandfather” of punk rock. Rather than drawing a portrait of Iggy Pop, Helen Simard highlights the paradoxes of the rock star, a fantastic, charismatic character elevated to iconic status.

By way of testimonials, combined with dance and songs inspired by the hits of the day, the nine performers incarnate the dubious energy of a belated artistic consecration punctuated by grief, doubt and loss. The choreographer presents an absurd, dreamlike work where the motif of chaos becomes an engine of virtuosity – and vice versa.

Imbued with alternative cultures, Helen Simard refuses hierarchies between artistic disciplines, between popular art and elitist art. She views art as something to be experienced, with the spectators an integral part of the piece. With REQUIEM POP she refines and imposes her unique approach to dance.
