Black and Blue Matters

October 21, 2019 @ 7:30 pm

Black Theatre Workshop’s Discovery Series is a play development initiative that promotes the unseen work of emerging and established Black Canadian playwrights. This event supports Black Theatre Workshop’s mandate to reflect culturally diverse Canadian voices.

Black and Blue Matters tells the story of white presenting police officer David Harrison, a few years after he has been found innocent of shooting and killing Sammir Frederique, a gifted black youth and rising star DJ in the “Real City” music scene. Though he maintains his innocence, he is haunted by the slaying. His dreams are filled with a recurring nightmare of being persecuted and prosecuted by figures from his past in an ominous court of law known as The Oppressed People’s Court (OPC). The court is presided over by a trickster judge (Legba), with the assistance of her herald (x), who channel the unsettled spirits of POCs from both the Slain DJ, and David’s past.

With audience members serving as jury who decide the fate of the accused, and a number of twists in the story including alternate endings, Black and Blue Matters is a satirical, interactive, Hip Hop theatre piece, that deconstructs bias in legal systems, notions of justice, and the roles race, gender, and class play in the decisions made by state agents.
