Afrogalactica: A Brief History of the Future
April 19 @ 8:00 pm
Positioning herself as an anthropologist from the future, Kapwani Kiwanga’s live reading and video projection reflect on some major themes in Afrofuturism and their role in the development of the United States of Africa Space Agency. Plunging into the past to retrieve archives of popular culture, she uses science fiction to make projections about the future, examining the past from an African or African diasporic subjectivity.
Born in Hamilton, Ontario, Kiwanga is now based in Paris. She intentionally confuses truth and fiction in order to unsettle hegemonic narratives and create spaces in which marginal discourse can flourish. Kiwanga is short-listed for the Sobey Award 2018.
