jumatatu m. poe’s terrestrial reminds us that Black humans have a long, continuing terrestrial history that far precedes and will outlive the specific oppressions of the past five centuries of white supremacy. Inspired by the hot brown granules in desert dirt and beach sand, this is an examination of humans as earth. Performed with Samantha Speis and vocalist Rodrigo Jerônimo, it is an in-progress, three-hour performance installation that invites the audience to come and go throughout.

In this adaptation of Shakespeare’s sonnets, the La Fratrie ensemble deconstruct Elizabethan aesthetics, while paying homage to the timeless themes of lust, love, and the eternal. A sizable cast is summoned to reproduce the expansive of Shakespeare’s poetry and sound the depths of desire’s mystery. Nous serons éternels invites audiences to hear canonical poetry in a new light and in a dream-like state where music, dance, and theatre are fused. Through the timelessness of great works of literature and a patchwork of imagery, the audience is led to revisit memories that vulnerability and sensitivity might awaken.
Presented at La Chapelle from April 25 to 28.Find out more »
