As an official media partner of the 12th annual St-Ambroise Montreal Fringe Festival, Montreal Theatre Hub brings the #FringeBuzz in 2021 with an all-new interview series with artists from this year’s edition of the fest! In this Snapshot, we feature the Montreal English Theatre Award winning KIKI DRANIAS – playwright and director of ‘WHERE IS ANTON’ presented by Purple Divine from June 11-20 at the MainLine Theatre.

KIKI: Exploring themes of personal trauma, marital dynamics and one’s own conciliation with the disillusionment of age and money, WHERE IS ANTON (written and directed by Kiki and starring Kelly Craig & Anton Koval), is a layer-driven modern tragedy about how a profound trauma plays third wheel in a couple’s relationship.

MTH: What can audiences expect from the experience of seeing it?
KIKI: A sense of self-recognition.

MTH: What was the idea and inspiration behind the piece?
KIKI: I wanted to work with the play’s real-life couple and parallel I have been waiting to render homage to favourite plays of mine: Betrayal by Harold Pinter and John Osborne’s Looking Back in Anger.

MTH: Why did you choose the Fringe as the place to premiere this work?
KIKI: I was given a spot in this year’s Fringe last minute and I had a week to write the play. Carpe diem!

MTH: What has it been like trying to create a show during a pandemic?
KIKI: We knew that all we could do was try our best given the circumstances. The toughest is not being able to rehearse at all in the venue till two days before opening. And as we have had no rehearsal space, Kelly, Anton and I often rehearsed at my place and because the role playing gets intense and loud, my neighbours complain. But we got to collaborate and create and so despite the pain-in-the-ass restrictions, it’s all been a blessing!

MTH: What’s kept you driven to keep creating during this past year?
KIKI: Sanity, wine and refusing to let Corona win.

MTH: How does it feel to be back presenting on a live stage?
KIKI: AMAZING yet of course scared to death of WILL THEY LIKE IT? If so, then great. If not, well then… Because I got to work with Kelly & Anton and do something we all truly love. I’m so fucking grateful.

MTH: How does this show/story speak to our present times?
KIKI: The play asks WHO ARE WE really?

MTH: What have you missed most about the Fringe?
KIKI: Being an audience member.

MTH: Favourite Fringe show you’ve ever seen?
KIKI: PENUMBRA by Paul Van Dyck.

MTH: #Fringebuzz: which show(s) on the 2021 lineup are you most stoked to check out?
KIKI: THE CELEBRITY OBSESSION by Marissa Blair. I love her hutzpah.
