‘Malunderstood: A Virtual Performance Experience’ extended through the lockdown

Kenny Streule's autobiographical creation to remain online for viewing

January 12th, 2021 – The production team of Kenny Streule’s Malunderstood: A Virtual Performance Experience has announced that the digital creation will be available for streaming until the end of Québec’s provincial lockdown… whenever that will be!

Curl up on the couch after curfew and prepare to laugh as you watch this charming short film that offers a mix of comedy, puppetry and storytelling. Directed by Amy Blackmore, Kenny tells the autobiographical story of how he was raised by his Swiss German grandmother: Beaver.

Filmed at Kenny’s childhood home on his family’s rural dairy farm last spring, Malunderstood: A Virtual Performance Experience is an ode to the original solo show Malunderstood produced by KS Presents and MainLine Theatre in February 2020.

Shortly after the original two-week sold-out run of Malunderstood at MainLine Theatre, COVID-19 hits. At the beginning of the pandemic, Kenny’s family pleaded with him to move from the “big city”, back to the dairy farm where he grew up. They insisted he head back to the farm in order to hunker down and “wean off the virus” until the pandemic was over. After much negotiation, it was confirmed. For the first two months of lockdown, Kenny moved back home and lived in close proximity to his family members, including the inspiration for the character of Beaver. This pandemic-living situation influenced the latest iteration of Malunderstood.

“Thanks to my trilingual upbringing, I am often Malunderstood,” says creator Kenny Streule. “I never thought I’d be moving back home. However, somehow, through these extraordinary circumstances, I was able to reconnect with the inspiration of the character of Beaver and revisit what it truly means to be Malunderstood.”
