Part-time / Replacement position

Job Title : Laboratory Technician Theatre (Costume)
Position Status : Replacement Part-time (50%). Effective immediately for an indeterminate period of time, until the return of the employee

Salary Scale : 22.59$ – 30.46$


Under the general supervision of the Dean of Arts and General Education, and the direct supervision of the Chairperson, the Technician maintains the costume lab, associated hardwire and equipment; assists faculty and students in the costume lab as needed.


  • Maintain all wardrobe machines and prepare for costume classes and work sessions. i.e. domestic sewing machines and overlockers, computerized machines, industrial sewing machines and sergers, the industrial irons, dye vat, washers and dryers. Arrange for annual maintenance of all machines as required.
  • Maintain, prepare and ensure that all vital notions are stocked for classes, work sessions and productions i.e. needles, threads, pins, buttons, zippers, scissors, mannequins, grommets, tapes, seam rippers, fasteners, eyelets, tracing paper, interfacings, Velcro stock and all other sundries required.
  • Ensure that all required fabrics are purchased for classes and productions, purchasing as necessary and maintaining the wardrobe budget.
  • Maintain and organize the large costume inventory, which includes contemporary and period apparel, boots and shoes, hats, and other clothing sundries, jewellery etc. Log in and out costumes used for productions and classes, ensure costumes are laundered or dry-cleaned as needed.
  • Liaise with groups from the College, community, and other groups to pull and file costumes, while tracking which company borrowed them.
  • Maintain the costume department’s collection of period wigs and ensure that make up is provided for productions.
  • Research and share information on new state of the art computerised costuming software for pattern making and development.
  • Assist faculty in coordinating and supervising all costume execution classes, production labs and performance runs for departmental productions and presentations including show calls, quick changes, set ups and strikes. 
  • Adhere to the wardrobe timetabling which often includes evenings and weekend work sessions as well as student vacation periods. There will not be a “scheduled” regular shift. Work hours will change according to the needs of the department. Evening and weekend work will be required during the department’s production periods. More specifically production periods are October, November, December and March, April and May. Classes will also be held during these times, therefore the work schedule will not be exclusively evenings and weekends. 
  • Employee will report to the chairperson of the department to receive schedule and priority of tasks.


Education: To have a college diploma (DEC) in Professional Theater or an equivalent diploma in an appropriate specialty as recognized by the competent authority.

Specific Requirements:

  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience in a professional theater wardrobe environment an asset.
  • Prior knowledge of pattern-making and sewing 
  • Prior experience in working with production materials and vital notions as well as wardrobe machines
  • Prior experience with Costuming software an asset
  • Availability to work a flexible schedule according to Department needs, INCLUDING evenings and weekends.
  • MS WORD and EXCEL (Basic knowledge an asset)
  • French – Basic oral
  • English – Intermediate oral and written
