From August 11th to August 15th, Théâtre Denise-Pelletier, in association with Pride Montreal, International First Peoples Festival and Black Theatre Workshop, proudly presents Lilies; Or, The Revival of a Romantic Drama for 5 nights only. Centring Indigeneity and diverse worldviews, the prolific company lemonTree creations, from Toronto, leads this revival of the Michel Marc Bouchard classic, English translation of Les Feluettes, 33 years after its creation at the Salle Fred-Barry. In this reimagined production, director Cole Alvis, with a cast of predominantly Indigenous and Black artists, brings this romantic drama into the 21st century, unearthing love, lies and colonialism, and making visible the high incarceration rates of these communities.
The show is presented in English and includes Blackfoot and Anishinaabemowin languages.
In 1912, Vallier and Simon, two schoolboys in Roberval, Quebec, fall in love performing a play about Saint Sebastian. Their passion is interrupted when one is unjustly sent to prison. Decades later, a group of inmates agree to stage this story of young love in search of their own redemption.
Featured in the cast is film and stage veteran Alexander Chapman, who played Lydie-Anne in John Greyson’s film adaptation of Lilies. He is joined on stage by an ensemble of prison inmates ‘playing’ the 1912 story including Mark Cassius (Ragtime, Jesus Christ Superstar), John Walmsley (A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Wars), Tsholo Khalema (Box 4901, Cake), Troy Emery Twigg (They Shoot Buffalo, Don’t They?; Dancing the Universe in Flux), Joseph Zita (Picture This), and lemonTree artists Ryan G. Hinds (#KanderAndEbb, MacArthur Park Suite) and Indrit Kasapi (Les Moutons, The Boys in the Band).
“This production is enlightening…”
– Stage Door
“There is a lot of beauty in this production… [It] extends far beyond Canadian queer theatre history, and into our concepts of stories, meaning, power and reconciliation.”
