Les Grands Ballets presents ‘Dancing Beethoven’ from February 19 to 23

Performances of Beethoven’s Symphonies No. 5 and No. 7 will celebrate the composer's 250th anniversary

Montreal, February 4, 2020 – From February 19 to 23, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens is presenting Beethoven’s Symphonies No. 5 and No. 7 – two immense works by the great composer to observe the 250th anniversary of the birth of this monumental figure in classical music.

The American Garrett Smith will open the evening with the remarkable Symphony No. 5, one of the world’s most important and recognized symphonies. Drawing inspiration from the differences and singularity of each of us, Smith creates a piece celebrating the power that can result from acceptance of our individuality and the excitement stemming from the discovery of a uniqueness regained when masks fall.

In the second part, a bequest from the late Uwe Scholz. The dancers, in symbiosis with the majestic music of Symphony No. 7, will present a work that produces, with its athletic achievements and its geometry danced in unison, a leitmotif effect. Performed to open the 2017 season, the gifted German choreographer’s work instantly won over the hearts of Montrealers.

The Grands Ballets Orchestra will be conducted by Dina Gilbert, the company’s Principal Conductor. The ensemble consists of 70 top-level musicians and soloists, and for over thirty years has been a factor in Les Grands Ballets’ success.

Educational Matinée
On Friday, February 21, the show will be staged at 1:15 p.m. as an Educational Matinée. At a cost of $15 for students, this is an excellent way of introducing young people to neoclassical and contemporary styles of ballet.
