Montréal, August 29th, 2019. TOHU unveils its 16th season, with an impressive programming that includes twelve main stage shows, world-class performances and exceptionally creative productions.
For its 2019–2020 season, in addition to local circus classics, TOHU shines the spotlight on international circus, with memorable shows from all around the world. Africa, Australia, Europe and South America will be sending to Montréal, world capital of circus arts, their greatest circus artists!
From abroad… TOHU is happy to welcome, for the first time, a North African company, one of the greatest contemporary circus companies in Morocco: GROUPE ACROBATIQUE DE TANGER. The company will bring audiences into a magical journey to the sunset country with its collective creation, Halka. Montréalers will be happy to learn that their favourite Australians from CIRCA are back with their latest acclaimed production, Humans. Here, the ten acrobats push back to the extreme the limits of their physical capacities! From Germany, a true pioneer of mask theatre, FAMILIE FLÖZ, will perform Hotel Paradiso, a show that is both a masterful thriller and absurd comedy. After travelling Europe and performing at the greatest festivals, Spanish VAIVÉN CIRCO brings its third creation to TOHU, a first in Canada for the company. Titled Esencial, the production, inspired by Waldorf’s toy “rainbow”, makes for a spectacular scenography!
And let’s not forget the two international co-presentations this season. First, a supercharged performance by the Argentinians of UN POYO ROJO and their namesake show Un Poyo Rojo acclaimed at MONTRÉAL COMPLÈTEMENT CiRQUE in 2018. The production, which gives an uproarious look on the game of seduction and male rivalry, is co-presented with Centaur Theatre. And, from the Netherlands’ ARCH8, TOHU and Maison Théâtre will co-present Tetris—the world-acclaimed show inspired by the well-known game!—, which combines acrobatics and gravity-defying movements.
And here… As TOHU has for the past 16 years supported with immutable passion the growth of contemporary circus and, especially, the development of Québec-based artists, local talent will undoubtedly shine again this year! First, with Blizzard, the newest FLIP FABRIQUE creation. The great Québec City-based company creates a soft winter-like atmosphere, and bring the audience into a sublime journey that is sure to impress… And CIRQUE ALFONSE is back! Following a successful premiere at MONTRÉAL COMPLÈTEMENT CiRQUE in 2017, the energetic troupe from Lanaudière returns with Tabarnak, a festive and unrestrained happening! And, on Easter weekend, young ones will enjoy Glob by LES FOUTOUKOURS, an enchanting and human moment, filled with surprises.
Finally, a TOHU season would not be the same without its classics. It is therefore with great pleasure that TOHU brings back the Coups de cœur, the Tournoi de l’Impro Cirque and THE NATIONAL CIRCUS SCHOOL’s Spectacle des finissants.
“TOHU keeps its promise for a 16th season: contributing in making Montréal an environment-friendly and community-inclusive international capital for circus arts. It’s with pride and diligence that we intend to pursue this mission, which continues to be a unique laboratory for sustainable development through culture in the world.”
