MONTREAL, August 27th, 2019 – This fall season, La Chapelle Scènes Contemporaines presents dance creation Anima / Darkroom featuring award-winning Krump dancer 7Starr for four performances from September 26th to October 1st, 2019.
The raw lexicon of the Los Angeles-born street dance is in dialogue with an alphabet of light, silence, noise and darkness. Known for its unequivocal speed of expression, the style’s essential materials stretch across new scores in this collaboration. Bereavement’s dull-sharp feeling underwrites Lucy M. May’s choreography, offering a scaffolding which upholds the soloist’s lucid freestyle.
With light designs by Jon Cleveland, music by Patrick Conan featuring productions from veteran Krumper and beat-maker Big Rulez, Anima / Darkroom delves from the question, “Do you see me?” reverberating with the human effort to listen and be heard, to bear witness and be seen.
Anima / Darkroom is presented in partnership with Gutta Zone. This festival, created by Vladimir 7Starr Laurore & Otis Pez Hopson in 2009, is the first and largest Krump event in Canada, bringing together the country’s most acclaimed Krumpers and international guests. The 7th edition will take place in parallel with Anima / Darkroom, from September 27 to October 6, 2019 in Laval.
“7Starr and May have managed to strike a fine balance with clear intention and a tangible sense of care. At work was an ethos of trust, of permissions to experiment towards the extension of potential. […] This piece, created in the convergence, and conversation between these two artists, brings many questions to the table regarding permissions of representation, permissions of ownership, permissions of voice.” Thea Patterson, SPRINGBOARD PERFORMANCE
