MONTREAL, April 30th, 2019 –– The 14th annual Montreal International Anarchist Theatre Festival (MIATF) presents the world premiere of veteran Montreal playwright, actor, author and musician Norman Nawrocki’s gripping new play, “Women Strike! 1919–2019, The Winnipeg General Strike,” on Tuesday, May 21st, at La Sala Rossa (4848 boul St-Laurent) for one show only.
Written and directed by Nawrocki, the play is produced by Babushka Theatre, a new Montreal / Winnipeg theatre troupe formed for the project. Four Montreal actors star in this premier: Micheline Chartier, Romy Léa, Melissa Toussaint and Julie Tristant.
The documentary play is based on the lives of nine courageous Winnipeg immigrant working women from 1919 involved in the six week long general strike when 35,000 workers shut Winnipeg down. They represent a few of the thousands of nameless and faceless “foreign” women from the city’s North End who participated in this inspiring, historic event. Domestic workers, sweatshop workers, single moms, fearless women all – their stories were never told. They made history as much as the striking men, but because they were women – “foreign, alien women”– they never got the recognition they deserved. Rad women from yesterday for today. Since working conditions for many women – especially marginalized, poor, immigrant or migrant workers – still haven’t changed, their fight for justice continues. The play addresses this.
The piece will also be performed by another troupe of actors in Winnipeg & Brandon, June 13 & 14, 2019 as part of the official centennial commemoration activities in Manitoba celebrating the historic 1919 general strike.
Tickets: $13 at the door or in advance online from La Sala Rossa. https://casadelpopolo.com/calendar/
