TOHU hosts the best of contemporary circus in 4th Annual “COUPS DE CŒUR”

10 Performances from FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 2, 2019


Montréal, February 13th, 2019 ● Not-to-be-missed celebration of excellence, diversity and circus creativity, COUPS DE CŒUR is back for a fourth year, February 20 to March 2, 2019. For ten performances, TOHU’s circular hallwill be home to a host of contemporary circus artists from leading companies, who stand out by their originality, virtuosity and mastery of their art. Everyone, TOHU enthusiasts as well as new fans, will be won over by the selection of original feats and impressive acts, a wonderful and captivating insight on today’s circus!

For the first time, the direction is by ANTHONY VENISSE—well known for his acclaimed MONTRÉAL COMPLÈTEMENT CiRQUE creations!—, who will extend the experience beyond the stage, into the performance hall, and put a more intimate atmosphere forward. COUPS DE CŒUR 2019 will be under the guidance of a new and irresistible master of ceremonies, Frenchwoman MOOKY CORNISH. Here are the stars of this fourth COUPS DE CŒUR:

JÉRÉMIE ARSENAULT, FLIP FABRIQUE (QUÉBEC), DIABOLO

Graduated from the École de cirque de Québec in 2008, a school he discovered at only 14 years old, Jérémie chose circus arts as his trade. From his graduation on, the artist who specializes in acrobatic diabolo has worked with various major companies, including Cirque du Soleil and Cirque Éloize, travels the world and perfects his craft. The winner of various international prizes is one of the founding members of FLIP Fabrique.

MARIE-ÈVE DICAIRE, CIRQUE ÉLOIZE (QUÉBEC), EQUILIBRIST

First trained as a dancer, Marie-Ève earned her diploma from the École nationale de cirque (ÉNC) in 2006, where she specialized in hand balancing. She performed her act throughout Switzerland, Germany and France. Most recently, she was part of Cirque Éloize’s Nezha, where she was selected as a coup de cœur, as well as Les 7 Doigts’ Triptyque and Vice et Vertu. To this day, Marie-Eve continues to dance, but on her hands…

ANNA KICHTCHENKO, LES 7 DOIGTS (QUÉBEC), AERIAL SILKS

Devoted performer thirsty for adventures born in Moscow, Anna graduated from the ÉNC in aerial silks in 2011. She explores and develops her craft with partners from various artistic and cultural backgrounds, and then shares her passion with audiences all around the world. She recently performed in productions such as Cuisine & Confessions (Les 7 Doigts), Vice & Vertu (Les 7 Doigts).

MASHA TERENTIEVA, CIRQUE DU SOLEIL (CANADA), AERIAL HOTEL CART, AERIAL ACT

Masha Terentieva was born in St. Petersburg to a family of artists. Graduated from the ÉNC in 2008, she travelled the globe, performing from Sydney to Broadway. She received in 2017 five awards at the prestigious Festival Mondial du Cirque de Demain for her Aerial Hotel Cart act. The sensual, sophisticated and daring artist is presently part of Paris Merveilles at Paris’ Lido, directed by Franco Dragone. She has the honour of representing Cirque du Soleil in Coups de Cœur 2019.

AMÉLIE AND ANTHONY VENISSE (FRANCE/QUÉBEC), CLOWNS

Graduated with honours from the École Supérieure des Arts du Cirque in Brussels in 2005, Amélie Venisse embodied her Mademoiselle Cerise character in 2006. After a visit in Montréal and a tour in Mexico with a clown trio which won the Annie Fratellini award at the Festival Mondial du Cirque de Demain in 2007, she also received an award at the Solycirco Festival in 2009. Amélie has since performed on several stages and cabarets, alone or as a duo with her brother Anthony. (A. Venisse’s journey below)

JULIEN DESFORGES (QUÉBEC), SLACKLINE

Slackline enthusiast since 2006 and founder of Slackline Mtl, Julien Desforges has seen firsthand the development of the discipline from its beginning, in the province as well as all around the globe.

Through his art, Julien Desforges shares a philosophy based on wellness, health and stability, which he cultivates on the slackline. His unique style, inspired by his complementary dance, yoga, meditation and martial arts practices, stands out through precise poses and fluid movements performed with precision, strength and agility.

QUENTIN MAROTINE (FRANCE), MUSICIAN

At 20 years old, Quentin subscribed to the teachings of saxophonists Sylvain Beuf and Olivier Py. Since 2006, he pursues a professional career, performing numerous music concerts and working on circus shows in Germany for several years. The experience brought him to introduce computer-aided musical devices for which he trained in Paris. His passion for travelling and his musical encounters led him to world traditional music repertoires, especially Serbian, Bulgarian and Turkish. 

ALSO, TWO ARTISTS FROM THE NATIONAL CIRCUS SCHOOL IN MONTRÉAL (QUÉBEC)!

NICOLAS ALLARD, ÉNC (QUÉBEC), SWINGING TRAPEZE

Nicolas, who grew up in the South of France, discovered circus arts at 13 years old. In 2013, he began training at the École nationale de cirque de Châtellerault. He discovered swinging trapeze, which brought him several times to Montréal for traineeships with Victor Fomine. At 18 years old, he joined the higher education program at the ÉNC to specialize in swinging trapeze and dance trapeze. Nicolas created a spectacular, attractive and emotional act, and will graduate in spring 2019.

SANDY TUGWOOD, ÉNC (QUÉBEC), ROPE

The Australian-born ÉNC graduate began her training in Montréal in 2016, after three years at Flying Fruit Fly Circus, the Australian national circus. Sandy performed as an acrobat for the company in Circus under my bed, presented at the Sydney Opera House and during the Melbourne international Comedy Festival, among others. More recently, and closer to home, she was part of Phénix, the 2018 MONTRÉAL COMPLÈTEMENT CiRQUE creation.
