Black Theatre Workshop presents “How Black Mothers Say I Love You” at Centaur Theatre

February 28 – March 16, 2019 | Montreal Premiere

Montreal, January 25, 2019 – Black Theatre Workshop presents How Black Mothers Say I Love You by Trey Anthony, playing at Centaur Theatre from February 28 to March 16, 2019. This is a play that will resonate deeply with many Caribbean Canadians: immigration and how it affects the lives of mothers and the children they very often leave behind. Infused with a bold original score blending gospel, reggae and R&B with classical music. How Black Mothers Say I Love You is a story of separation, reconciliation and love

“No one talks about the scars that children bare when parents leave” says playwright Trey Anthony. The first Black woman to have a television show on a Canadian network (‘da Kink in my hair), Anthony is currently a permanent writer at the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN).

Director Tamara Brown will bring to life the story of Daphne, a Jamaican woman who immigrated to Canada in the hopes of providing a better life for her children. This touching story explores the poignant and present-day impact of immigration on family, the consequences of this unthinkable sacrifice, and challenges of homophobia in the relationship between a mother and daughter who don’t see eye to eye.

How Black Mothers Say I Love You is a must-see Black Theatre Workshop production. Opening night is on February 28th at Centaur Theatre. It then travels to the Rose Theatre in Brampton, Ontario to play on March 19 & 20, 2019.
