Tuesday Night Café Theatre – a student-run, experimental Anglophone theatre company affiliated with the English department of McGill University – is excited to present Paula Vogel’s “Desdemona: A Play About a Handkerchief”.
In a series of brownouts, or cinematic takes, set in the servants’ quarters of the palace on Cyprus, Desdemona (who has an “Upperclass. Very” accent) visits her maid Emilia (“Broad Irish brogue”) and frantically searches through piles of laundry. Throughout their conversations over the next week, which sometimes include the visiting Bianca (“Stage cockney”), they drink wine, discuss sex (things like the size of Iago’s penis), and dance around ideas of the whereabouts of a certain handkerchief embroidered with strawberries.
The three characters present as women, but might be portrayed by a person of any gender. For the characters of ‘Emilia’ and ‘Bianca’, the director seeks to cast BIPOC (Black +/ Indigenous +/ People of Colour) — they will be prioritized at auditions.
You are free to prepare a monologue, but you don’t have to. Bits from the play will be posted in the event page, and the auditions will revolve around those. Note that all characters have heavy accents (as described in quotes above) — you are encouraged to become familiar with these accents before the audition (don’t worry though, we’ll have time to perfect them later).
