“BOOM X” makes Montreal premiere at the Segal Centre

Hotly Anticipated Generation X Sequel to Rick Miller's Hit Show "BOOM!" opens this February

Montreal, January 24, 2019 – The Segal Centre for Performing Arts is proud to welcome back Rick Miller for the Montreal premiere of BOOM X, a Kidoons and WYRD in association with Theatre Calgary and The 20K Collective production.

BOOM X is the second installment in Miller’s trilogy of shows designed to tell a big-picture story: 75 years of history in this corner of our planet. While BOOM explored the Baby Boomer era, this sequel tells the story of Generation X: the 70s, 80s, and early 90s. Just in time for Valentine’s Day, BOOM X rocks the Sylvan Adams Theatre at the Segal Centre from February 14 to March 10, 2019.

“One man. 25 years. 100 of the most influential figures.”

BOOM X is an explosive solo performance that documents the music, culture, and politics that shaped Generation X. The show takes audiences through 25 years, gives voice to over 100 influential politicians, activists and musicians, and is a mind-blowing experience for audiences of all generations.

Picking up where BOOM left off at Woodstock in 1969, BOOM X sees Rick time travel from 1970 to 1995, from the FLQ Crisis to the second Referendum (which were also the glory days of a certain Montreal baseball team…). Some classic BOOM characters reappear (Elvis gets fat, Lennon gets shot, and Reagan gets elected), but the focus moves from his mother to his own personal story. BOOM X once again blends cutting-edge multimedia, unforgettable characters, and tour-de-force storytelling into a truly unique theatre experience. The world premiere of BOOM X was presented at Theatre Calgary in January 2019.

“4 STARS! BOOM X is an immensely entertaining, high energy magic carpet ride with a real genie for a tour guide” – Calgary Herald

Shifting BOOM X to be his own story was a natural progression according to Miller. “In BOOM, I felt it important to capture the music of the time, but also the political, cultural and technological influences behind each song. The same principle applies to BOOM X, but on a more personal level,” says Miller. “I naturally have a fondness for the 1980s, the era in which I came of age. That’s when I developed an emotional connection to historical and cultural events, especially to music. At a very young age, I was able to imitate popular singers, and found the biggest payoff was to parody them, even though I secretly wanted to be one of them. By the end of BOOM X, just as a generation found its voice through music, I also found a voice of my own.”

“This is the sequel you’ve all been waiting for! BOOM was the surprise hit of the 2015-2016 season, and I’m stoked to have Rick Miller back at the Segal Centre and to see how he tackles my generation,” said Artistic and Executive Director Lisa Rubin.
