AUTS presents “Spring Awakening” Jan 24 – Feb 2

McGill Arts Undergraduate Theatre Society stages award-winning musical at Moyse Hall

MONTREAL, January 15th, 2019 — McGill University’s only musical theatre company, the Arts Undergraduate Theatre Society, is gearing up to present the musical Spring Awakening from January 24 to February 2. Spring Awakening, which features music by Duncan Sheik and the book and lyrics by Steven Sater, astonished audiences when it premiered on Broadway in 2006.

Spring Awakening is an angst-ridden, tenderly honest rock musical about a group of adolescents in turn-of-the-century Germany. Based on a play by Frank Wedekind first performed in 1906, the story follows characters as they begin to explore their own sexuality and confront the restrictions their society places upon them in doing so. Though over 100 years removed from our own context, Spring Awakening continues to strike a chord with the awkward, fun and tragic realities of growing up.

AUTS is a student run company, and the only one on campus that exclusively produces musicals. But the group is not exclusive to McGill students, and Spring Awakening features several students from other programs in Montreal, such as Concordia’s theatre program, and Dawson College, both in the cast and on the production team. At the end of the day, AUTS showcases the work of extremely dedicated students who oversee every aspect of the production, from fundraising to the design and direction.

Presenting one show a year, AUTS is a proud part of McGill’s vibrant student theatre scene. The production team has been working on Spring Awakening since the end of the previous school year, and the cast has been rehearsing since October. The cast is made up of both aspiring actors and students with other focuses. Starring as Wendla and Melchoir are Leah DeBorba, and Natan Shaviv, both dedicated students at McGill in their first year.

“AUTS brings together people from all the faculties at McGill, as well as those in the larger Montreal community, to create art. Everyone brings their own unique experiences and skill sets to the production, allowing for us to not only put on a great show, but also learn in the process,” says producer, Elisabeth Bragale. “Theatre gives us the opportunity to share our passions and grow as a community.”

Spring Awakening is presented at Moyse Hall from January 24 – 26 and January 31 – February 2, with performances beginning at 7:30. Tickets can be purchased online at autstheatre.ca.
