MONTREAL, October 17th, 2018. This November 15th, 16th and 17th, La Chapelle Scènes Contemporaines presents choreographer-performer Manuel Roque’s bang bang as part of Daniel Léveillé Danse Série B Dance Series.

Bang bang is a personal and universal contemporary ritual that allows the body to express itself at its most combative and desperate, at its most free. A present-day study about surpassing the oneself, bang bang is a staged work creation for a kamikaze no-holds-barred soloist  on the theme of resistancethat has resistance as a theme. The work follows a score that is also an ordeal. It both literally and figuratively questions the notion of performance, from the space of representation to the metaphors of our contemporary Western pace of life.

In parallel to his career as a performer for leading Quebec choreographers (Marie Chouinard, Sylvain Émard, Daniel Léveillé, etc.), Manuel Roque has independently developed short choreographic workforms. His first solo, Raw-me (2010), distinguished itselfwas a stand-out work at the Festival Vue sur la Relève and at OFFTA. In 2012, he co-created with performer Lucie Vigneault the duo Ne meurs pas tout de suite, on nous regarde. In 2014, he created In Situ, presented at Espace Culturel Georges-Émile-Lapalme atof Place des Arts, as well as the solo Data. He was then invited to participate in Migrant Bodies, a research project initiated by Canadian and European partners, in the context of which he created Matière Noire (2015). Bang bang (2017), won the CALQ award for best choreographic work of the 2016-2017 season as well as the 2017 Prix de la danse de Montréal (Montréal dance award) for individual performer, performer category (2017).
