Due to its immense success at the 2017 St-Ambroise Montreal Fringe Festival (read our review of the original production here), Blue Ox Productions’ debut production, Invasive Species, is having a series of encore performances this November at the FreeStanding Room.
An ecological thriller written by Gabriel Schultz, the play describes the journey of one man (Junior) whose fate and survival relies entirely on the impact of a toxic and disgusting amphibian, the Cane Toad. Invasive Species demonstrates the symbiotic relationship between man and nature at its most grotesque and extreme, an embodiment of the disintegrating state of modern America. Through Junior’s personal descent, and symbolically the western world’s as well, the audience is taken on a psychological ride that leaves them in a state of repugnance as they observe the vile example of a man set out to destroy nature, all the while unknowingly destroying himself
The show is accessible, entertaining, grotesque and surreal, with elements of magic – a standout at this year’s Fringe Festival due to its distinction in the genre of environmental art. There is no glossy imagery of untouched wilderness in Invasive Species. Instead it takes the unique approach of revealing what other ecological plays and TV programs try to hide. It’s a dark comedy driven by an important cause: we believe more needs to be done in the art world to spur people into environmental activism.
Invasive Species won the Frankie Award for ‘Making Big Things Happen in Small Places’ and it was nominated for the ‘Most Promising New Theatre Company’ and the ‘Best English Production’ Frankie Awards at the 2017 Fringe Festival. The team of Invasive Species consists of artists who have collaborated in the Montreal theatre, film, and music scene. Geordie Productions, Repercussion Theatre, Black Theatre Workshop, and Leonard Cohen are some of the names the team have performed, designed, and mentored under in the past
