META Awards

Call for nominations
The Unsung Hero of the Theatre (UHOT) Award
The Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Award
Submission Deadline: September 15, 2016

The Montreal English Theatre Awards (METAs) will return to the historic Rialto Theatre for the 4th Annual Ceremony on October 24th, 2016. The much-anticipated event comes at the end of the 2015-2016 season, to celebrate outstanding  productions and practitioners in Montreal English theatre.

“The prestigious and relatively new METAs honour the wealth of established talent in Montreal theatre’s anglo community. At the same time, they offer a glimpse into the community’s healthy future by recognizing emerging artists.”

Jim Burke, Montreal Gazette

The METAs Committee (METAC) is now asking for companies and individuals to submit nominees for 2 honorary awards: the Unsung Hero of the Theatre (UHOT) Award and the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Award. Please find descriptions of these awards below, with links to submit a nomination.

Call for nominations: Unsung Hero of the Theatre (UHOT) Award

The METAs Committee (METAC) is very pleased to announce the continuation of the Unsung Hero of the Theatre (UHOT) Award, celebrating the members of our community who too rarely get the public recognition they deserve. Think of the backstage contributions of stage managers, carpenters, set painters, administrators, and the myriad of talented craftspeople that bring a production to life.

The first UHOT Award (2014) went to Melanie St-Jacques, celebrated for her work as one of Montreal’s outstanding Stage Managers. Last year’s recipient (2015) was Howard Mendelsohn, who was honoured for his contributions in production management at Centaur Theatre Company as well as his role as a mentor to many Montreal technicians, designers, and stage managers.

Over the past 2 years the Committee has received a great response from companies, and the community’s reaction to the UHOT presentation at the METAs Ceremonies confirms the award as an important part of the annual event.

Call for nominations: The Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Award

Montreal is regularly celebrated as the most dynamic and diverse city in our province, and the spectrum of stories and storytellers on our stages is slowly evolving to reflect that. To further this progress, the EDI Award was established to recognize and encourage practices of access and inclusion, and to celebrate those who embrace the range of cultures, identities and abilities that make up and enrich our city.

Last year’s inaugural award went to Geordie Productions for their engagement with culturally diverse actors, implementing live sign language translations of their shows, and programming a season dedicated to the diverse world we live in.

Practitioners immersed in Montreal’s theatre community are invited to submit a candidate (individual or company) who has demonstrated an outstanding contribution that reflects the full diversity of Montreal and its artists on stage or off. Candidates in all areas of theatre production are eligible for nomination. Self-nominations are welcome!
