Successions’ Michaela Di Cesare to host 1980s Revival Book Launch Party at Rialto Theatre on June 4th

Join award-winning writer Connie Guzzo-McParland (The Girls of Piazza d’Amore, 2013) for live music, book readings, and dancing on Sunday, June 4th – a book launch like you’ve never experienced before!

Hosted by Michaela Di Cesare
Live music by Bad Selfies

With its Calabrian flavour, Connie Guzzo-McParland’s The Women of Saturn is gripping, multilayered, and as satisfying as southern Italian food. Set in 1980 in a high school in gritty Park Extension, it chronicles the lives of three women of different generations connected and haunted by the same Italian village of their past. Experience Montreal in flashbacks through the decades, including Expo 67 and local personalities, along with being transported to Italy of the 50s.

An unusual blend of charm, nostalgia and grit; authentic in its evocation of mid-20th century Italian Montreal, the novel’s preoccupations with cynical politics and organized crime resonate with topical relevance for contemporary readers. Richly textured and panoramic, an engrossing read.”

– Elaine Kalman Naves, author of The Book of Faith

The story captivated me from the opening sentence where the heroine of the novel, Cathy Anastasia, recalls how she imagined life through the filter of black-and-white post-war Italian films. Connie Guzzo-McParland has produced a literary novel that is also a page-turner.”

– Mary di Michele, author of Bicycle Thieves

Connie Guzzo-McParland will be interviewed by award-winning actress and playwright Michaela Di Cesare, whose newest play, Successions, will be part of Centaur Theatre’s 2017/18 season. Guzzo-McParland is a long time Montrealer, having immigrated to Canada with her family in the 1950s via the MS Saturnia. Signed copies of The Women of Saturn will be available for purchase.
