Musical theatre in Montreal: shows to see this summer 2017

Can’t make a trip down to Broadway this summer? This upcoming June 2017 will be an action-packed month for musical fans in Montreal as the city’s most prominent community theatre troupes raise the curtain on their season’s main stage productions! Here are our selection of hot-ticket shows to mark into the agenda:


June 4 – 25: Tempers flare and worlds collide in It Shoulda Been You, an uproarious musical ode to wedding day insanity presented by the The Dora Yasserman Yiddish Theatre at the Segal Centre for Performing Arts. When an unexpected ex-boyfriend crashes the ceremony, an event already on the edge gets tipped right over it! RSVP to this unblissfully charming musical celebration and find out if the wacky wedding actually ends with an ‘I do’. Performed in Yiddish with English and French supertitles. Directed and choreographed by Jim White.

June 8 – 25: Alan Menken and Howard Ashman’s affectionate musical spoof of 1950s sci-fi movies hits the Harold Greenspon Auditorium as the The Côte Saint-Luc Dramatic Society presents Little Shop of HorrorsA down-and out floral assistant becomes an overnight sensation when he discovers an exotic plant with a mysterious craving for fresh blood! Soon “Audrey II” grows into an ill-tempered, foul-mouthed, R&B-singing carnivore who offers him fame and fortune in exchange for feeding its growing appetite, finally revealing itself to be an alien creature poised for global domination! Directed by Anisa Cameron.

June 9 – 17. Who ever said fairytales were OGRErrated? This summer the West Island Theatre Association (WISTA) presents an updated retelling of the Tony Award-winning Shrek the Musical at the Louise Chalmers Theatre! A benign green ogre and his sidekick Donkey save the land from an evil lord and rescue a lovely princess from a terrible fate. Based on the blockbuster movie and the book by William Steig. Featuring large-scale puppetry designed by director Philippe Gobeille.

June 15 – 17: Montreal’s premiere vocal ensemble, The Lyric Theatre Singers return to Concordia’s DB Clarke Theatre to present Hello Broadway, their brand new musical theatre revue featuring 40 performers backed by five musicians. Hello Broadway is a perfect blend of contemporary and traditional musical theatre favourites presented in a way only the Lyric Theatre Singers can! Audiences will be delighted to hear highlights from Hamilton, Avenue Q, Spamalot, Grease, and A Chorus Line performed alongside selections from Once Upon a Mattress, Funny Girl, Man of La Mancha, Follies, Chicago, Gypsy, and so much more! Directed by Bob Bachelor and Cathy Burns.
