On June 17th and 18th 2016, two-time META Award nominee WISTA (West Island Theatre Association) will play its final 3 performances of the high-energy and hilarious Tony Award-winning musical comedy Bye Bye Birdie at the Louise Chalmers Theatre (501 boulevard St. Jean, Pointe-Claire, QC). Check out the show stills from this critically acclaimed production of the hit Broadway satire that’s got everyone talking!

From the same theatre troupe that previously brought to Montreal audiences praised productions of Hairspray (2011), Thoroughly Modern Millie (2012), Legally Blonde (2013), Gypsy (2013), How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (2014),  Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (2015), and most recently, You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown (2015), Bye Bye Birdie is WISTA’s eighth major stage production and one of its most ambitious to date.

With a combination of jazz, rock ‘n roll, big band, and latin-infused music by Charles Strouse (the same composer of Annie) as well as lyrics by Lee Adams and a book by Michael Stewart, the musical spectacle features a cast of 25 performers, 17 pit musicians, and a production team of 50+ members.

Inspired by the true story of Elvis Presley being drafted to the army, Bye Bye Birdie is a satire that takes place in 1958 and centres around rock ‘n roll superstar Conrad Birdie’s induction. His agent and song writer (Albert Peterson) and Albert’s secretary and love interest (Rose Alvarez) plan a farewell performance for Birdie on the Ed Sullivan television show, which they hope will provide the publicity to sell his new song “One Last Kiss” and bring Albert’s company out of debt. At the conclusion of the performance, Birdie will give a real kiss to a randomly chosen girl (Kim MacAfee) from Sweet Apple, Ohio. When Conrad arrives in small-town Sweet Apple to bestow his final kiss upon his lucky fan, however, uproar and pandemonium ensue.

“WISTA presents Bye Bye Birdie is a hilarious and satirical take on the classic Tony Award winning musical. Each character is so very relatable; we all had that celebrity crush, overbearing parents and loved to hear the latest gossip as teens. The energy, enthusiasm and talent I see at every rehearsal are enough to make every audience member ‘Put On A Happy Face’!” says Craig Berger, Producer and WISTA President.
